ISO Insurance Rating Information

The Insurance Services Office (ISO) provides information to insurance companies to help determine property insurance rates for homes and businesses. While the exact formulas are private, factors like firefighting capabilities, fire loss history, and community risk reduction efforts all play a role.

The ISO Public Protection Classification (PPC) looks at four key areas of a community:

  • Emergency communications – the dispatch center that responds to calls
  • Fire department services – our training, equipment, and staffing
  • Water supply – availability and reliability for firefighting
  • Community Risk Reduction – programs that help prevent fires and other emergencies

ISO typically evaluates communities every five years. Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue works closely with ISO to ensure our department’s resources and capabilities are accurately represented.

How BWFR Is Involved:

Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue (BWFR) participates in the ISO evaluation process because it provides an objective assessment of our fire suppression capabilities and helps residents and businesses secure the most accurate insurance coverage.

The ISO evaluation looks at several aspects of a fire department, including:

  • Fire station locations
  • Fire apparatus and equipment
  • Staffing levels and response performance
  • Firefighter training
  • Community Risk Reduction programs, such as:
    • Fire code enforcement
    • Public education
    • Fire investigations

A community’s ISO rating can influence the insurance premiums that homeowners and businesses pay. Although the exact impact depends on each insurance company and is not publicly disclosed, a lower ISO rating generally means lower insurance costs.

BWFR is committed to maintaining a strong ISO rating, helping keep our community safe while supporting residents and businesses with more favorable insurance options.
